SMG is turning into a harmonized area with nature and people!
- Eco-friendly development based on eco-environment conservation
Saemangeum area is accelerating its infrastructure construction
and land reclamation*
.
* (Reclamation Rate) 30.6% of the total land area(291㎢) had been
reclaimed by January, 2023
Since its opening, Saemangeum Development and Investment
Agency (SDIA) reached a remarkable achievement, attracting
most companies (21 companies, 42% of the total achievement)
last year. KRW 1 trillion ($ 767 M) Inter-regional Road
Project was confirmed in October 2022, and the first phase of
the South-North Highway was completed in December 2022.
These serial events show Saemangeum changing itself a
entrepreneurs’ favorite place.
Accelerating development, Saemangeum is turning into an
eco-friendly city in which nature and people are harmonized,
established on an eco-environment.
Eco-environment Site Project (17.1% of total land area) is
under construction in stages from 2013 to 2050 by Ministry of
Environment. The first stage of the project was already
completed in August, 2021 and opened on Environment Day
(June 5) in 2022
Stage 2-1 of the project (3.57㎢) is the largest part of the
project and halophyte habitats, wildlife habitats, and
eco-islands will be established adjacent to Saemangeum Lake
by 2030.
The first stage of 785,832㎡ (size of 110 soccer fields) is
composed of three districts – conservative area of swamp
(354,712㎡), wildlife observation area (221,023㎡), educational
& experiential zone(211,023㎡).

The natural eco-wetland of the area improves the water
quality of the Jusang Stream flowing into the Saemangeum
Lake, allowing wild animals and plants such as various birds,
mammals and amphibians to get inhabited.
The area is inhabited by endangered wild animals such as
wildcats and otters. The number of species increased from 396
species in 2021, the year of completion, to 430 species in
2022.
This project shows the necessity and importance of eco-environment complex which supports wildlife habitats. Wild
animals can be watched at the observation deck of the
eco-wetland from this year.
There are also three types of trails – a walking path(3km) - a
children’s course (1.1km), a bike route (2.3km) with the view of
wide horizon and relaxing spaces.
The second phase of the South-North Highway will be
completed in July, improving mobility and accessibility to
anywhere in SMG as well as making easy access to the
eco-complex.
In addition, National Saemangeum Reclamation Museum* near
the eco-complex, which shows the history and culture of
reclamation in SMG, is scheduled to open in July in 2023,
generating synergies with the eco-complex.
